ERP and accounting systems: finance and operations questions at the right grain

ERP data answers the questions finance and operations care about most, and punishes careless questions hardest: an order is not a delivery, a delivery is not an invoice, and a subsidiary's figures need its own currency and calendar.

SAP Business ByDesign, SAP S/4HANA and SuccessFactors are built on Nexatron's engine for SAP OData services, which reads SAP's released APIs as each person. NetSuite, Oracle Fusion, Microsoft Dynamics and the accounting systems will connect through their own APIs under each person's role.

  • Which sales order lines are past their requested date and not fully delivered?
  • How does receivables aging split across buckets at month end, by subsidiary?
  • What was gross margin by product line last quarter, after credit memos?

Questions and answers

Why read ERP data through APIs instead of the database?
Released APIs keep the ERP's own authorization checks in force for each person and survive upgrades. Reading tables directly bypasses the roles that decide who may see which company code or subsidiary.
How are SAP systems connected?
Through SAP's released OData services, read as each person's own SAP user, so the business roles SAP already assigns decide which company codes or sales organizations an answer can include.
