ServiceNow MCP server: ask questions, get governed answers

ServiceNow is an enterprise workflow platform; it holds incidents, requests, changes, problems, assets and SLA data for IT and business services.

Try it on your own data in a pilot.

ServiceNow reporting questions you can ask

Typical questions from IT and service operations. Each answer shows the definition, source and query behind it.

  • How many open incidents are there by priority and assignment group?
  • Which incidents breached their SLA this month?
  • What is the mean time to resolve incidents by category this quarter?
  • Compare incident volume this month with last month, by service.
  • Which change requests are scheduled in the next 7 days, by risk?
  • Which assignment groups have the largest backlog of unresolved requests?

Worked example: a governed ServiceNow answer

One question, and everything the answer shows so you can check it. The figures are invented sample data.

How many P1 and P2 incidents breached their resolution SLA last month, by assignment group?

Approved definition: Resolution SLA breach

An incident whose resolution SLA record is marked breached, counted once per incident, by the month the incident was opened and the group it is assigned to.

Source

  • task_sla
  • incident (priority, assignment_group, opened_at)

Query (ServiceNow encoded query (Aggregate API))

GET /api/now/stats/task_sla
  sysparm_query=task.sys_class_name=incident
    ^task.priorityIN1,2
    ^sla.target=resolution
    ^has_breached=true
    ^task.opened_atONLast month@javascript:gs.beginningOfLastMonth()@javascript:gs.endOfLastMonth()
  sysparm_group_by=task.assignment_group
  sysparm_count=true

Common pitfalls when asking ServiceNow questions

Each one is settled once in an approved definition, so every person and every assistant gets the same answer.

  • SLA schedules pause the clock

    A business-hours schedule stops the SLA clock overnight and at weekends, so elapsed time and business elapsed time differ. The definition says which one a metric uses.

  • Priority can change

    Priority is derived from impact and urgency and is often changed during an incident. The definition states whether to count current priority or priority when the SLA breached.

  • Which table is a ticket

    Incidents, requested items and cases live in different tables under task. "Tickets" in a question needs a definition that names the tables included.

How Nexatron connects to ServiceNow

Whose permissions
Each person connects their own ServiceNow account, so answers return only the records that person can already see in ServiceNow.
Read and write
Questions are read-only. A small set of ServiceNow actions also exists; each one is previewed first, runs only after explicit confirmation by a permitted person, and can be switched off by your administrator.
Setup
Sign-in happens on the vendor's own OAuth consent screen; Nexatron never sees a password. Steps: choose the source → check prerequisites → enter connection details → approve access → verify → ask. No data migration and no pipeline to build: data is queried where it lives.

ServiceNow MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

Nexatron's hosted MCP server is a governed ServiceNow MCP connector: Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot ask questions of your ServiceNow data through it. Each person signs in as themselves, so the assistant sees only what they may see.

Connect ServiceNow to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot

  1. Connect ServiceNow to your Nexatron workspace.
  2. In Claude, add Nexatron from Claude's connector directory. In ChatGPT or Copilot, add a custom MCP connector with the server URL https://api.nexatron.io/api/v1/mcp.
  3. Sign in with your own Nexatron identity (OAuth 2.1), then ask your ServiceNow questions.

ServiceNow connector FAQ

Can I ask ServiceNow questions without writing queries?
Yes. The connector is available now. Ask in Teams, Slack, the Nexatron web app, or an AI assistant connected through Nexatron's MCP server.
Does Nexatron respect ServiceNow permissions?
Yes. With a personal connection, answers return only the ServiceNow records that person can already see.
Can Nexatron change data in ServiceNow?
Only through optional actions that a permitted person previews and confirms. Asking a question never changes ServiceNow data.
What do I need to connect ServiceNow?
A user who can approve access on the vendor's own sign-in screen.
Is there a ServiceNow MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?
Yes: Nexatron's hosted MCP server, once ServiceNow is connected to your workspace. It is Nexatron's server, not one published by ServiceNow, and the assistant gets the same governed answer as the Nexatron app.
Can I get ServiceNow reporting answers without building a new report?
Yes. Ask the question and Nexatron returns the number with the definition and encoded query behind it. ServiceNow reports and dashboards stay in place for the views your team checks daily.
How is Nexatron different from ServiceNow's own AI features?
ServiceNow's AI features work inside ServiceNow. Nexatron answers from Teams, Slack, the web app or a connected assistant, applies your approved definitions, and can combine ServiceNow with other connected systems in one answer when federation is on (the default for new workspaces).

Try Nexatron on your own ServiceNow data

A pilot starts with three questions your team already asks and the report you trust for each, so you can check the answers yourself.

ServiceNow is a trademark of its owner. Nexatron is not affiliated with or endorsed by it; the name and mark identify the system Nexatron connects to.
