Shopify MCP server: ask questions, get governed answers

Shopify is an ecommerce platform; it holds orders, products, customers, inventory levels, discounts, refunds and storefront sales data.

Try it on your own data in a pilot.

Shopify AI analytics: what you can ask

Typical questions from ecommerce and merchandising teams. Each answer shows the definition, source and query behind it.

  • What were total sales by day over the last 30 days?
  • Which products had the highest revenue last month?
  • What is the repeat customer rate this quarter versus last quarter?
  • Which products are low on inventory by location?
  • How much did we refund last month, by product?
  • Compare average order value by sales channel this month versus last month.

Worked example: a governed Shopify answer

One question, and everything the answer shows so you can check it. The figures are invented sample data.

What was average order value by sales channel last month?

Approved definition: Average order value

Order subtotal after discounts, before shipping and tax, divided by the number of orders, excluding cancelled and test orders, in the shop currency.

Source

  • Orders (currentSubtotalPriceSet, sourceName, createdAt, test)

Query (GraphQL (Shopify Admin API))

query {
  orders(first: 250, query:
    "created_at:>=2026-09-01 created_at:<2026-10-01 -status:cancelled test:false") {
    nodes {
      sourceName
      currentSubtotalPriceSet { shopMoney { amount } }
    }
  }
}
# paged, then averaged per sourceName

Result

Sample data: average order value by channel last month, invented figures
ChannelOrdersAverage order value
Online Store1,920$86.40
Point of Sale610$54.10
Shop245$71.80

Common pitfalls when asking Shopify questions

Each one is settled once in an approved definition, so every person and every assistant gets the same answer.

  • Gross, net and total sales

    Gross sales, net sales after discounts and returns, and total sales with shipping and tax are different numbers. The definition names one.

  • Shop currency and presentment currency

    Customers can pay in their own currency while the shop reports in another. Mixing the two price sets gives totals that match neither.

  • Store time zone

    Day and month boundaries follow the store's time zone setting. Questions that use UTC instead put late-evening orders in the wrong day.

How Nexatron connects to Shopify

Whose permissions
Each person connects their own Shopify account, so answers return only the records that person can already see in Shopify.
Read and write
Read-only. Nexatron reads Shopify data to answer questions and never writes to Shopify.
Setup
Sign-in happens on the vendor's own OAuth consent screen; Nexatron never sees a password. Steps: choose the source → check prerequisites → enter connection details → approve access → verify → ask. No data migration and no pipeline to build: data is queried where it lives.

Shopify MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

Nexatron's hosted MCP server is a governed Shopify MCP connector: Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot ask questions of your Shopify data through it. Each person signs in as themselves, so the assistant sees only what they may see.

Connect Shopify to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot

  1. Connect Shopify to your Nexatron workspace.
  2. In Claude, add Nexatron from Claude's connector directory. In ChatGPT or Copilot, add a custom MCP connector with the server URL https://api.nexatron.io/api/v1/mcp.
  3. Sign in with your own Nexatron identity (OAuth 2.1), then ask your Shopify questions.
How the Nexatron MCP server works

Shopify connector FAQ

Can I ask Shopify questions without writing queries?
Yes. The connector is available now. Ask in Teams, Slack, the Nexatron web app, or an AI assistant connected through Nexatron's MCP server.
Does Nexatron respect Shopify permissions?
Yes. With a personal connection, answers return only the Shopify records that person can already see.
Can Nexatron change data in Shopify?
No. Nexatron only reads Shopify data.
What do I need to connect Shopify?
A user who can approve access on the vendor's own sign-in screen.
Is there a Shopify MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?
Yes: Nexatron's hosted MCP server, once Shopify is connected to your workspace. It is Nexatron's server, not one published by Shopify, and the assistant gets the same governed answer as the Nexatron app.
How do Nexatron answers compare with Shopify Analytics?
Shopify Analytics has its own report definitions. Nexatron uses the definitions your company approves, shows them with each answer, and can explain a gap between the two, for example refunds counted on the refund date versus the order date.
Can ChatGPT answer Shopify sales questions through Nexatron?
Yes. Once your store is connected to your Nexatron workspace, add Nexatron as a custom MCP connector in ChatGPT, sign in, and ask. ChatGPT receives the governed answer with its definition and source.
Can Shopify data be combined with ad spend or CRM data?
Yes, when those systems are connected and federation is on for your workspace, as it is by default for new workspaces. Nexatron then pulls only the fields a question needs from each source and joins them inside your tenant, for example revenue by channel next to ad spend.

Try Nexatron on your own Shopify data

A pilot starts with three questions your team already asks and the report you trust for each, so you can check the answers yourself.

Shopify is a trademark of its owner. Nexatron is not affiliated with or endorsed by it; the name and mark identify the system Nexatron connects to.
