Google Sheets MCP server: ask questions, get governed answers
Google Sheets is a cloud spreadsheet application; it holds team-maintained tables such as budgets, trackers, lists, sales logs and ad hoc reports.
Try it on your own data in a pilot.
Google Sheets dashboard questions you can ask
Typical questions from business teams and analysts. Each answer shows the definition, source and query behind it.
- What is the total by category in our budget tracker this quarter?
- Which rows in the sales log have a missing owner or date?
- Show month-over-month change in total spend from the expenses sheet.
- Who are the top 10 customers by amount in the orders tab?
- How many items are marked overdue in the project tracker, by owner?
- Which product lines had the largest margin change month over month?
Worked example: a governed Google Sheets answer
One question, and everything the answer shows so you can check it. The figures are invented sample data.
What was total spend by category in the budget tracker in Q3?
Approved definition: Spend
Sum of the Amount column on the 2026 actuals tab, by Category, for rows dated in the quarter. Subtotal and total rows are excluded.
Source
- Budget tracker › 2026 actuals (Date, Category, Amount)
Query (SQL over the sheet)
SELECT category, SUM(amount) AS spend
FROM "Budget tracker"."2026 actuals"
WHERE date >= DATE '2026-07-01'
AND date < DATE '2026-10-01'
AND category <> 'Total'
GROUP BY category
ORDER BY spend DESC;Result
| Category | Spend |
|---|---|
| Software | $84,300 |
| Contractors | $61,750 |
| Travel | $18,900 |
Common pitfalls when asking Google Sheets questions
Each one is settled once in an approved definition, so every person and every assistant gets the same answer.
Header rows and merged cells
Titles above the header, merged cells and blank spacer rows break the table shape. The definition records which row holds the headers and which range is data.
Numbers stored as text
Values typed as "$1,200" or with a different decimal separator are text, not numbers. The definition states how a column is parsed.
Total rows inside the data
A Total or Subtotal row in the middle of a tab doubles the sum. The definition excludes it explicitly.
How Nexatron connects to Google Sheets
- Whose permissions
- Questions run through the connection's Google Sheets account, so its grants are the outer limit. Inside that, Nexatron roles and the row policies your administrator defines decide what each person can see.
- Read and write
- Read-only. Nexatron reads Google Sheets data to answer questions and never writes to Google Sheets.
- Setup
- Sign-in happens on the vendor's own OAuth consent screen; Nexatron never sees a password. Steps: choose the source → check prerequisites → enter connection details → approve access → verify → ask. No data migration and no pipeline to build: data is queried where it lives.
Google Sheets MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Nexatron's hosted MCP server is a governed Google Sheets MCP connector: Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot ask questions of your Google Sheets data through it. Each person signs in as themselves, so the assistant sees only what they may see.
Connect Google Sheets to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot
- Connect Google Sheets to your Nexatron workspace.
- In Claude, add Nexatron from Claude's connector directory. In ChatGPT or Copilot, add a custom MCP connector with the server URL
https://api.nexatron.io/api/v1/mcp. - Sign in with your own Nexatron identity (OAuth 2.1), then ask your Google Sheets questions.
Google Sheets connector FAQ
- Can I ask Google Sheets questions without writing queries?
- Yes. The connector is available now. Ask in Teams, Slack, the Nexatron web app, or an AI assistant connected through Nexatron's MCP server.
- Does Nexatron respect Google Sheets permissions?
- Yes. The Google Sheets account's grants are the outer limit, and your row policies narrow it for each person.
- Can Nexatron change data in Google Sheets?
- No. Nexatron only reads Google Sheets data.
- What do I need to connect Google Sheets?
- A user who can approve access on the vendor's own sign-in screen.
- Is there a Google Sheets MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?
- Yes: Nexatron's hosted MCP server, once Google Sheets is connected to your workspace. It is Nexatron's server, not one published by Google Sheets, and the assistant gets the same governed answer as the Nexatron app.
- Can Nexatron replace a Google Sheets dashboard?
- It complements one. A sheet dashboard shows the charts someone built; Nexatron answers new questions about the same data, with the tab, columns and query shown so the number can be checked against the sheet.
- Can Claude read my Google Sheets through Nexatron?
- Yes, once the sheet is connected to your Nexatron workspace. Add Nexatron in Claude, sign in, and ask. Claude gets the governed answer with the tab and query it came from.
- How is this different from AI features inside Google Sheets?
- In-sheet AI works on the sheet you have open. Nexatron answers from Teams, Slack, the web app or a connected assistant, applies shared definitions, and can combine a sheet with systems such as your CRM or ERP when they are connected and federation is on (the default for new workspaces).
Try Nexatron on your own Google Sheets data
A pilot starts with three questions your team already asks and the report you trust for each, so you can check the answers yourself.
Google Sheets is a trademark of its owner. Nexatron is not affiliated with or endorsed by it; the name and mark identify the system Nexatron connects to.
