Microsoft Excel MCP server: ask questions, get governed answers

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application; it holds workbooks of business data such as budgets, forecasts, sales logs, inventory lists and reports.

Try it on your own data in a pilot.

Microsoft Excel dashboard questions you can ask

Typical questions from finance and business analysts. Each answer shows the definition, source and query behind it.

  • What is the total by category in our budget workbook this quarter?
  • Which rows in the sales log are missing a region or amount?
  • Show month-over-month change in expenses from the finance workbook.
  • Who are the top 10 customers by revenue in the orders sheet?
  • Which inventory items have quantity below the reorder level?
  • Which product lines had the largest margin change month over month?

Worked example: a governed Microsoft Excel answer

One question, and everything the answer shows so you can check it. The figures are invented sample data.

Which inventory items are below their reorder level?

Approved definition: Below reorder level

Rows on the Stock sheet where On hand is less than Reorder level, one row per SKU and warehouse, from the most recently uploaded workbook.

Source

  • Inventory.xlsx › Stock (SKU, Item, Warehouse, On hand, Reorder level)

Query (SQL over the workbook)

SELECT sku, item, warehouse, on_hand, reorder_level
FROM "Inventory.xlsx"."Stock"
WHERE on_hand < reorder_level
ORDER BY on_hand - reorder_level;

Result

Common pitfalls when asking Microsoft Excel questions

Each one is settled once in an approved definition, so every person and every assistant gets the same answer.

  • Formulas and saved values

An uploaded workbook holds the values from its last calculation. If inputs changed without recalculating, the answer reflects the saved values.

  • Several tables on one sheet

Side-by-side tables, notes above headers and blank spacer rows break the table shape. Formatting data as an Excel table, one per sheet, avoids guesswork.

  • Dates typed as text

Dates entered as text, or in mixed formats, do not sort or filter as dates. The definition states how a date column is read.

How Nexatron connects to Microsoft Excel

Whose permissions
Questions run through the connection's Microsoft Excel account, so its grants are the outer limit. Inside that, Nexatron roles and the row policies your administrator defines decide what each person can see.
Read and write
Read-only. Nexatron reads Microsoft Excel data to answer questions and never writes to Microsoft Excel.
Setup
Upload a workbook in the Connections screen; nothing to install and no external credentials. Steps: choose the source → check prerequisites → enter connection details → verify → ask. No data migration and no pipeline to build: data is queried where it lives.

Microsoft Excel MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot

Nexatron's hosted MCP server is a governed Microsoft Excel MCP connector: Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot ask questions of your Microsoft Excel data through it. Each person signs in as themselves, so the assistant sees only what they may see.

Connect Microsoft Excel to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot

  1. Connect Microsoft Excel to your Nexatron workspace.
  2. In Claude, add Nexatron from Claude's connector directory. In ChatGPT or Copilot, add a custom MCP connector with the server URL https://api.nexatron.io/api/v1/mcp.
  3. Sign in with your own Nexatron identity (OAuth 2.1), then ask your Microsoft Excel questions.

Microsoft Excel connector FAQ

Can I ask Microsoft Excel questions without writing queries?
Yes. The connector is available now. Ask in Teams, Slack, the Nexatron web app, or an AI assistant connected through Nexatron's MCP server.
Does Nexatron respect Microsoft Excel permissions?
Yes. The Microsoft Excel account's grants are the outer limit, and your row policies narrow it for each person.
Can Nexatron change data in Microsoft Excel?
No. Nexatron only reads Microsoft Excel data.
What do I need to connect Microsoft Excel?
Only the workbook: upload it in the Connections screen.
Is there a Microsoft Excel MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?
Yes: Nexatron's hosted MCP server, once Microsoft Excel is connected to your workspace. It is Nexatron's server, not one published by Microsoft Excel, and the assistant gets the same governed answer as the Nexatron app.
Do I still need to build an Excel dashboard?
Not for one-off questions. Upload the workbook and ask your question; Nexatron answers with the sheet, columns and query it used. Keep a dashboard when people need the same formatted view every week.
How is this different from Copilot in Excel?
Copilot in Excel works inside the workbook you have open. Nexatron answers from Teams, Slack, the web app or a connected assistant, applies shared definitions, and can combine an uploaded workbook with connected systems such as your CRM or ERP when federation is on (the default for new workspaces).
Can Claude answer questions about an Excel workbook through Nexatron?
Yes. Upload the workbook to your Nexatron workspace, add Nexatron in Claude, sign in, and ask. Claude receives the governed answer with the sheet and query it came from.

Try Nexatron on your own Microsoft Excel data

A pilot starts with three questions your team already asks and the report you trust for each, so you can check the answers yourself.

Microsoft Excel is a trademark of its owner. Nexatron is not affiliated with or endorsed by it; the name and mark identify the system Nexatron connects to.
