Workday MCP server: ask questions, get governed answers
Workday is a cloud HR and finance system; it holds workers, positions, org hierarchies, compensation, absence, payroll and financial ledger data.
Try it on your own data in a pilot.
Workday AI analytics: what you can ask
Typical questions from HR and finance teams. Each answer shows the definition, source and query behind it.
- What is headcount by supervisory organization and location today?
- How many open job requisitions are there, by department and age?
- Show terminations by month over the last year, by job family.
- Compare total compensation cost by cost center versus last quarter.
- Which workers have no manager assigned in the organization?
- What is the average time to fill open positions by recruiting team?
Worked example: a governed Workday answer
One question, and everything the answer shows so you can check it. The figures are invented sample data.
What is headcount by supervisory organization today?
Approved definition: Headcount
Active employees with a primary position as of today, counted once each. Contingent workers and additional jobs are excluded.
Source
- Workers (worker type, status, primary position)
- Supervisory organizations
Query (Workday Query Language (shortened))
SELECT supervisoryOrganization, COUNT(worker)
FROM allActiveEmployees
WHERE isPrimaryJob = true
GROUP BY supervisoryOrganizationResult
| Supervisory organization | Headcount |
|---|---|
| Engineering | 212 |
| Sales | 131 |
| Finance | 48 |
Common pitfalls when asking Workday questions
Each one is settled once in an approved definition, so every person and every assistant gets the same answer.
Employees and contingent workers
Headcount usually means employees only, while capacity planning may include contractors. The definition states which worker types are in.
Effective date versus entry date
A change entered today can take effect last month. Point-in-time questions need the effective date, or historical counts move after the fact.
Additional jobs
A worker with an additional job appears twice if both positions are counted. Counting primary positions keeps one person to one row.
How Nexatron connects to Workday
- Whose permissions
- Each person connects their own Workday account, so answers return only the records that person can already see in Workday.
- Read and write
- Read-only. Nexatron reads Workday data to answer questions and never writes to Workday.
- Setup
- Sign-in happens on the vendor's own OAuth consent screen; Nexatron never sees a password. Steps: choose the source → check prerequisites → enter connection details → approve access → verify → ask. No data migration and no pipeline to build: data is queried where it lives.
Workday MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot
Nexatron's hosted MCP server is a governed Workday MCP connector: Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot ask questions of your Workday data through it. Each person signs in as themselves, so the assistant sees only what they may see.
Connect Workday to Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot
- Connect Workday to your Nexatron workspace.
- In Claude, add Nexatron from Claude's connector directory. In ChatGPT or Copilot, add a custom MCP connector with the server URL
https://api.nexatron.io/api/v1/mcp. - Sign in with your own Nexatron identity (OAuth 2.1), then ask your Workday questions.
Workday connector FAQ
- Can I ask Workday questions without writing queries?
- Yes. The connector is available now. Ask in Teams, Slack, the Nexatron web app, or an AI assistant connected through Nexatron's MCP server.
- Does Nexatron respect Workday permissions?
- Yes. With a personal connection, answers return only the Workday records that person can already see.
- Can Nexatron change data in Workday?
- No. Nexatron only reads Workday data.
- What do I need to connect Workday?
- A user who can approve access on the vendor's own sign-in screen.
- Is there a Workday MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?
- Yes: Nexatron's hosted MCP server, once Workday is connected to your workspace. It is Nexatron's server, not one published by Workday, and the assistant gets the same governed answer as the Nexatron app.
- How is Nexatron different from Workday's own AI?
- Workday's AI features work inside Workday. Nexatron answers people questions from Teams, Slack, the web app or a connected assistant, applies approved definitions such as what counts as headcount, and shows them with every answer.
- Can I get Workday reporting answers without a custom report?
- Yes. Ask the question and Nexatron returns the answer with the definition and query behind it. Custom reports stay useful for recurring, formatted output.
- Will a manager only see their own team's Workday data?
- Each person connects their own Workday account, so an answer returns only the workers that person can already see in Workday. A manager asking about headcount gets their own organization.
Try Nexatron on your own Workday data
A pilot starts with three questions your team already asks and the report you trust for each, so you can check the answers yourself.
